Compromise? The Senate Bipartisan Immigration Bill

The Senate created a bipartisan immigration bill. As it goes to the House many see hope, while others on both the left and right are not happy with the compromise.

Glenn Hurowitz argues that immigration is not just an issue of immigration. There are serious environmental consequences to the immigration of low wage workers, but most environmentalists have stayed out of the debate: “With environmentalists largely sitting it out, many usually pro-environment Democrats are all too happy to ignore these hidden costs of immigration as they seek to placate immigration advocates and foes alike.”

Rep. Tom Tancredo doesn’t hear his constituency calling for a compromise on immigration: “ Citizens are insisting that border security be demonstrated as an actual achievement, not simply a plan on Mr. Chertoff's desk or a ‘trigger’ in some legislative package. A new president and new Border Patrol leadership might salvage the morale and the mission of that law enforcement agency, but until that happens, the border will continue to be a sieve and our nation's security will continue to be at risk.”

James Edwards says that the Senate immigration deal is “capitulation, not compromise”: “An amnesty-guestworker program is bad anyway you look at it. Bad policy. Bad politics. Republicans: Surrender at your peril.”

The LA Times sees much hope in the new immigration bill, but worries that the Democrats will not step up to pass the legislation in the House: "Speaker Nancy Pelosi…has already expressed 'serious concerns' about the bill, and the freshman class of Democrats does not seem enthusiastic. The consequences of failure this spring would be catastrophic.”

Are you not listening to your legal constituents. The majority of us are telling you to deport the illegal people now!!! The present immigration laws are adequate and do not need adjustment. If U.S. businesses need these people let business sponsor them in and guarantee in writing they will provide a job for at least two years that will pay 125% or more of minimum poverty as set in the government guidelines for the family size plus family health insurance.
Get a sponsor, background criminal check and a health checkup and welcome to the United States neighbor, glad to know you.
The illegal people knew they were breaking our laws when they came here and know the consequences. They broke our immigration laws because they know they do not qualify to come here. What needs to be done now is enforce the laws we have and deport them.
The only legislation needed here is passing a law that will require all people show proof they are citizens or are legally in the country before they do any bank business, send or receive money by wire, use or get a credit card, buy or rent a house, rent a hotel/motel room, have a job, register to vote, have a wireless telephone, postal address, turn on any utilities, buy a car, qualify for any social services, have a drivers license, qualify for a social security or tax number, or purchase tickets for any public transportation. Any illegal caught with false documents should be deported with no chance of qualifying for a legal visa at a later date. All illegal people must turn themselves in voluntarily , be finger printed and deported to be considered for any kind of legal visa at a later date. Any child born here must have one parent that is a citizen to be a citizen by birth. All of this is how it is in most of Europe now. I know this because my wife and I have been there seen and experienced it and it does work. If we don’t do things like this then guarding the border will be an impossible task. The illegal people will just keep coming and there is no good way to find them because presently there are no consequences for breaking our existing or any future immigration laws.
The immigration bill that is being debated by congress is a useless waste of time and will do absolutely nothing to stop illegal immigration. It may even make things worse by making legal immigration harder to qualify for. The illegal people do not obey the present laws and will not obey any new laws!
You can bet some of the illegal people here are just watching for a way and time to strike. Let’s deport all illegal people now and stop fooling around before someone gets hurt. The safety of the citizens and legal immigrants of the nation is being compromised while you in congress fiddle around. This country is in a war and people are being killed so you had better close the back door now.
Rome burned as Nero fiddled.
